Perks of interning with WIC

I get to learn way more than most moms do about the trials and tribulations of breastfeeding BEFORE I have children.

The human body is truly astonishing. The fact that a mother’s body will produce milk with higher calories for premature babies or babies who need to do some growth catch up is just one beyond amazing attribute of a mother’s milk.

Breastfeeding Perks for baby:

  • Antibodies & Immunities
  • Babies breastfed exclusively for 6 months are likely to have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses & episodes of diarrhea
  • Lower SIDS risk

Breastfeeding Perks for mom:

  • Reduces risk of cancer – breast, uterine & ovarian
  • Promotes postpartum weight loss
  • Decreases risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis
  • Child spacing – breastfeeding delays ovulation
  • Saves money – at least $800/year

Who knows… maybe becoming a Certified Breastfeeding Consultant is in my future 🙂

  1. HI, Katie! I am commenting here even though (my wife) breastfeeding is far in my past. There was no place to comment on your About page. Thanks for signing up to follow my blog on Diet, exercise and living past 100. Clearly you have a long way to go. Congrats on your education and aims. I almost envy you. I am a retired journalist who wrote about (and loved) economics and markets for 0ver 30 years. I am only a health writer for the past eight. I now love this field, probably for all the reasons you do. Also because everything I learn at this point may be keeping me alive longer. At 77 I have no margin of error when it comes to health. Best of luck with your blog and career!

    1. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will try to add a place to comment in my “about me” tab. So wonderful to hear we have common interests. I graduate in April and at that point will be able to schedule my RD exam! Very excited to see where my career takes me.
